LIVERPOOL FOUGHT back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with league leaders Arsenal in...
An utterly mesmerising game containing 30 shots, 22 fouls, a missed penalty, eight yellow cards, and some late world-class saves from Gunners’ keeper Aaron Ramsdale ensured this encounter was an instant classic
Early goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus gave Arsenal the perfect springboard for a potentially crucial away victory, but Liverpool played with greater desire and intensity in the second half in front of their fervent fans to deservedly get a point out of the game – denying Arsenal the win they craved so badly.
Liverpool – by last season’s lofty high standards – have been average away from home, but still racked up an impressive home record with just one defeat all season, and were still capable of producing magical games such as the 7-0 hammering against Manchester United early last month. But it got better for Arsenal, who were aiming for a fourth consecutive Premier League away win. Martinelli sprinted along the line before laying a beautiful cross for Jesus who snuck in behind Van Dijk and headed home past a hapless Alisson. Barely half an hour had passed and the Gunners were 2-0 up.
Despite being under serious pressure, Arsenal had their moments: Martinelli burst through on the counter attack but couldn’t find Bukayo Saka at the far post, and moments later captain Martin Odegaard shot straight at Alisson.
