Ryan Gravenberch is playing with a smile on his face and that may last for a long time as part of Jurgen Klopp's new generation
Not even Jurgen Klopp would paint himself as the patron saint of salvaging careers. But there's little doubt the Liverpool manager possesses a happy knack of improving many of the players who come under his purview.
With his forceful forward bursts, willingness to take on opposing players, propensity for playing on the turn and freedom to shoot from distance, Gravenberch has quickly established himself as a crowd favourite and, given his energy and clear potential for improvement, is in many ways an archetypal Klopp signing. The Dutchman has the raw materials, but has plenty of room to be further moulded to what Liverpool need.
The subsequent evidence suggests they cannot have enough such alternatives, not least given the midfield travails that dogged Liverpool last season and ultimately contributed to them missing out on Champions League qualification. And Gravenberch has been one of several players to grasp the Europa League as an opportunity, laying on a fine assist for Luis Diaz on his first Liverpool start at LASK and scoring his first goal against Union Saint-Gilloise in the next group game.
At 21, Gravenberch is part of a youthful new Liverpool midfield, joined by Alexis Mac Allister , Dominik Szoboszlai , Curtis Jones , Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic . What was recently seen as a weak point in the squad is now being regarded an exciting new strength, the possibilities only just beginning.
