This week The Monro joined a long list of pubs and bars closed since the beginning of the year
The announcement of the imminent closure of The Monro on Duke Street is the latest in a string of closures that have meant the end of some of Liverpool and Merseyside's beloved pubs and bars. In a statement published on behalf of the pub, they said "the situation is beyond our control."
They added: "As you can imagine, this news has been a massive shock to all of us, our families and loved ones. All of whom are now without jobs in the lead-up to Christmas. It's a shame to end on this note, but here we are. We are grateful for your support and loyalty over the years. It's people like you that made it all worthwhile."
Before it closed on Saturday, September 30, a spokesperson for the pub said: "We had an incredible first six months when we launched the venue in August 2019 just before COVID, but it’s been an uphill battle since then to keep things going amongst everything that has been happening in the world and particularly the hospitality sector.
Matt said it was a combination of factors that led to their decision to close, and in a statement to the ECHO he referenced the "escalating cost of living crisis," the rising costs of rent, utilities and supply chain disruptions and the "evolving" way people socialise since the pandemic as some of the reasons making the closure "necessary."
Those behind the "small independent business" said they were "really sorry" to have closed down, and said they had "tried our hardest" to stay open. The statement added: "We would like to thank everyone who supported us, but unfortunately great Tripadvisor reviews do not pay the bills.
