“It’s an accident waiting to happen'

A director of Lough Neagh Rescue says lives will be lost as a result of silt blockages between the Lough and the River Blackwater.

“It creates a massive delay in us responding to any incidents on the River Blackwater. When our pages go we race to get changed, race to get down into the water. “It damages our engines and our outdrives and all of our equipment, plus there is also a risk to crew should anything happen them. “We don’t need any further delays, we have it down to a bare minimum and any further delays will cost lives. Unfortunately that’s the nature of the game.

The other access to the River Blackwater from Lough Neagh is known as the Barmouth, which is currently impassable for boats. A protest is being organised by local fisherman and businesses this Sunday in an effort to have the route dredged and regularly maintained.
