It’s only later in life that you realise there were quite a few problems that meant I didn’t have a childhood like others did: taking medication all the time and going off to hospital to have check-ups and tests. Everything was monitored. I got through school okay and went into the world of work without too many aggravations, but at the age of 34 it was time for dialysis.
I did this at my local dialysis unit in Cromer. I managed to continue working as a motor vehicle engineer. My employer made some changes enabling me to finish early on dialysis days. This enabled me to dialyse in the evening and recover overnight while in bed. This meant I had to go back into HD at my local dialysis unit in Cromer. Then, in 2014, we thought we’d hit the jackpot. I got a phone call to say ‘we’ve got a kidney for you, which looks like it’s a one-to-one’ match’. So off I went to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
