I’m 60 now and have lived with rheumatoid arthritis with juvenile onset since the age of two 🔴 Lynda Hesketh has lived with the painful and debilitating condition for almost her entire life. She tells PMGallagher1 about her daily struggle
with juvenile onset since the age of two. It took me seven weeks to get diagnosed. I ended up in Chester Hospital, where I lived for four weeks, and then three weeks in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
I was seen at that time by Dr Barbara Ansell [the founder of paediatric rheumatology, who developed a classification system for childhood arthritis, and who died in 2001]. Parents weren’t allowed to stay with me and I was left there, so I remember crying my eyes out when my mum left. It was good in the end, though I didn’t see it that way at the time.
I had to give up my job with British Telecom, which I loved and had worked for since I was 17. But by the age of 26 I was struggling with my hips and was taking high levels of painkillers just to get through the working today. So I had to medically retire when I was 29. But by my late 30s I had a big flare-up in my joints and was ill for months trying to get it under control. Unfortunately, I had to go back onto steroids, which I’ve never managed to come off. I’ve been on[a type of immunosuppressant which slows down the body’s immune system and helps reduce inflammation] since I was 40, so 20 years now. I’m on a low dose as I get side effects.
