Ms Truss replied: “The jury is out. If I become prime minister I would judge him on deeds, not words.” The former chancellor criticised his rival in the contest to enter No10, insisting her economic plan to cut taxes to boost the economy would disproportionately benefit the most well-off. “If you’re someone working on a reasonably low wage, it’s worth about a pound a week. And if you’re a pensioner, who’s not working, it’s worth precisely zero.”
