A new PM will be announced within the week
Immense pressure had been mounting on the newly-appointed Prime Minister after a chaotic day in the House of Commons on Wednesday. A disastrous first 'mini-budget' also piled the pressure on Ms Truss and led to her firing her first chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.
In an unexpected press conference held at just after 1.30pm today , Ms Truss confirmed her resignation. Standing outside 10 Downing Street alongside her husband, she said she came into office "at a time of great economic and international instability."Ms Truss added: "I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party.
Ms Truss confirmed a leadership election will be completed within the next week to "ensure that we remain on path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country's economic stability and national security." Her resignation brings to an end the shortest ever tenure in number 10. She will remain in office until a new Prime Minister is elected.
