"Some people in this town don't like the idea of women running a farm," June tells Alice, who is mute for a period in the wake of her parents' death. "And they don't like that we keep to ourselves and that we're different. It scares them." There are brief flashbacks peppered in here and there to Agnes and Clem's time on the farm before Alice was born, as well as a drawn-out custody tussle for the elfin orphan, but none of it leaves you keen to devour hour-long episode after hour-long episode. The women of the farm start to become far more interesting prospects than Alice's slowly teased out family secrets.
