Francie Molloy says fishers are being made redundant by the ongoing and deadly crisis
Fish numbers in Lough Neagh are being demolished by the blue-green algae still devastating its waters, says an MP.
But the substance, which harms human health and is deadly to dogs, returned with a vengeance in July. If left to grow, blue-green algae can deplete oxygen in the water and cause fish kills which have a knock on effect on wildlife which rely on them for food. There have been reports of dead fish washing up in Toome and thick patches of the toxic substance pictured at Ballyronan, Oxford Island, Antrim Marina, The Battery, Washing Bay and more. But it is also fished, has tonnes of sand extracted from its bed and is used by swimmers, walkers, boaters and more.
So far they have confirmed its presence in Lough Neagh at Battery Harbour and Ballyronan Marina as well as Washing Bay and Brockagh. “It’s a multi faceted problem, but the main issue is determining who is responsible, and how to get the Executive to find a co-ordinated solution with all their other departments.”
