The lake, which provides half of Belfast's drinking water, has suffered damaging blue-green algae blooms all summer
Belfast City Council is to debate a motion on the future of Lough Neagh following a disastrous summer that saw its waters polluted with toxic blue-green algae.
The party's leader at the council, Brian Smyth, told us: "I think for many people in Northern Ireland, they are now seeing climate breakdown unfold right in front of their eyes. "Yes, the councils are limited in what they can do but for me it is about getting a political debate and trying to bring other people onboard with this."We are watching the lough die in front of our eyes and we have to change it. This motion tonight is about continuing that debate."
A report from Lough Neagh Partnership this summer also found that temperatures in the lake are rising. Mid Ulster MP, Francie Molloy, has been advocating for the move for decades, as no department has overall responsibility for it."Water quality in the north is the responsibility of the Environment Agency and NI Water. Dredging is under the responsibility of DEARA but they don’t do anything on the lough as the bed and soil of the lough is owned by the Shaftesbury Estate, however, the estate does not own the water.
"This is why I have been calling for decades for Lough Neagh to be brought into public ownership and managed by a community partnership."
