“We weren’t ready for that. I will never forget those four days, it was like hell” Saghar Khalid fled Kabul two years ago, she speaks to Taz_Ali_ about the escape and life now in Liverpool
and erased from public life. Women and girls have little to no access to education and employment, while female-friendly spaces such as parks and beauty salons have been banned.Ms Khalid was determined to make the most of her new life in Liverpool, enrolling in several courses at her local college, in English, maths, photography, employability and customer service, and taking part in art shows at the Tate gallery.
“If I was in my country I would be a prisoner. I’m an art lover, I can’t live in a place like that, I can’t even think about it.Ms Khalid and her husband, who worked as a police officer in Afghanistan, boarded an evacuation flight to the UK in August 2021 after spending four days hiding from Taliban fighters at her in-laws’ house.
The first thing Ms Khalid did when she arrived in Liverpool, she said, was become an active member of society so that she could improve her English. She said she has been blown away by the kindness she has received. Like any true Scouser, she said she preferred Liverpool to London, but she does have one complaint about British living.“I don’t like the food to be honest,” she said. “Too much fast food, and I don’t like cold sandwiches.”
