Loved and lost Blackpool dance hall that clubbers got a free bus to
A loved and lost Blackpool venue welcomed thousands of clubbers over the years - with many getting a free bus to dance the night away there.
Steve Jones posted: "On the free bus from Preston , great Saturday night." Anne Leyland said: " Loved the Mecca Highland Room, went every Saturday with friends on the coach from Accrington. Happy days." Joan Boaler said: "Fabulous times at Mecca in 60s as well - used to go with my best friend called Susan Rimmer who lived not far away." Anne Spencer said: "Fabulous memories of meeting lots of friends there every Saturday night. You didn’t need to go with anyone else because you just knew that there would be so many people there that you knew. Just amazing."
Sharon Smith posted: "Met my hubby at Blackpool Mecca, now 52 years on. Was an amazing place for sure." And Sheena McMoran posted: "Good times at Blackpool Mecca. We paid 50p that included entry and return coach from Chorley." Colin DJ'd at the Highland Room from 1973 to 1978 and and continued to play at the all-dayers beyond that from 1978 to 1983. He said: "It was a huge imposing building with a massive ballroom downstairs.
"It was just electric. Blackpool mecca had a special audience that became more willing to accept change as long as the music was still good." "At this time there was no internet. The main magazine that connected people was Blues & Soul, then there was word of mouth and there was fashion coupled with people coming from all over the UK. Each and every Saturday became important."
Janet told Lancs Live: "We all started on the soul scene in our early teens really from the youth club days. Clubs sort of struck up in Stoke-on-Trent which is quite close to where I live, so we used to go there.
