Glasgow's Low Emission Zone launching next month will protect city residents from breathing in “illegal fumes”, eco campaigners claim.
Drivers who flout the new rules will be slapped with an initial £60 fine - rising to up to £480 for repeat offenders or £960 for HGV and bus drivers. Gavin Thomson, transport campaigner at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: “Glasgow has been breathing toxic, illegal fumes for years and that’s finally coming to an end.
He said: “We need to make tackling air pollution a national priority. Low Emission Zones are just the start.” “But imposing this in just a few weeks time could have a devastating impact on livelihoods and the city centre economy.
