EXCLUSIVE: Tony Chambers went on to work at Salford Royal Hospital in the wake of Lucy Letby's arrest and investigation
The former CEO at the hospital where Lucy Letby murdered seven babies went to become a director of one Greater Manchester’s biggest hospital trusts – just months after resigning during the police investigation into the killer nurse.
By December 2018, he had been made a director at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, which ran its namesake hospital. He had already bought a £550,000 Grade II-listed home in Bolton with his wife in 2017. Mr Chambers left the health service in June this year after going on to take up a number of other high-profile roles in the NHS following his departure from the Greater Manchester organisation.
The jury heard that hospital bosses ignored months of warnings about Letby. Whistleblowers claim lives could have been saved if the Countess of Chester had called police earlier. Ms Kelly, the chief nurse at the Countess at the time, was also among the hospital leaders told multiple times by medics about their concerns about Letby, reported the Sunday Times. She went on to become the interim director of nursing at Salford Royal before taking on that post for Rochdale, from which she has this week been suspended.
He alleged it took managers three months to respond to a request from consultants to meet them after the second time they raised concerns, in February 2016. “Eventually, we reached a point in June 2016 when we said, ‘something has got to change’, but that’s not for me to talk about now.”
