Desperate parents grappling with summer childcare tell AasmaDay how it costs more than their mortgage, forcing them to take unpaid leave or attempt to work from home with kids on their lap.

as it is just too “ludicrously expensive.”

Stefanie Pegado, who lives in Ashford, Middlesex, is a single mother to 13-year-old daughter Erin and toldShe is taking a day of unpaid leave every week over the summer and is working longer days the rest of the week so she can take another day off.“The majority of holiday clubs are for children aged five to 12, but now Erin is 13, these are the first summer holidays I’ve not been able to get her into a holiday club or camp,” she said.

“On the other three days, it’s just a case of who and when can have her,” she admitted. “I’m lucky as I have a great network of friends, but most of them have younger children aged six or under so while Erin can go to them, it is not the ideal situation for her. “I know parents who have to send their children to grandparents in another town or city for several weeks. But not everyone is in the position to do this and it isn’t ideal as parents don’t want to not see their children for weeks.”

“I have already used up all my holidays in my current job and am going to finish on August 10 and take unpaid leave on 11 and 12 Aug. Those will be the only days I have off with my children over the summer before starting my new job on 15 August,” she explained. Dania, who is a content editor for an energy firm and will be beginning a new job as editorial lead at a financial company and whose husband is a web developer, admits trying to look after young children while working from home is an almost impossible task.

“Our two-year-old goes to nursery twice a week because that’s all we can afford and it costs us £650 a month for those two days. The other three days of the week, she is with us while we are working.
