Newcastle United are facing a backlash over a pre-season friendly against Mainz 05, with supporters of the German side calling for the game to be cancelled.
But the Supporters Mainz group have criticised their club's decision to organise the game, protesting against Newcastle's Saudi-backed ownership. "In times when authoritarian states, large corporations or billionaires are taking over international football in order to assert their interests, it is no longer possible to separate football and politics.
"We call on Mainz 05: Take a stand! Read your mission statement! Cancel the game against Newcastle United!"
