All flights have been suspended until 3pm following a fire in a multi-storey car park

A major English airport has been forced to close after a fire ripped through a multi-storey car park, causing it to collapse Firefighters are tackling the blaze at Luton Airport which began on Tuesday evening and appears to have destroyed hundreds of cars.

Four firefighters and a member of airport staff were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and another firefighter was treated at the scene. Footage posted on social media showed flames and smoke tearing through cars parked at the newly-built airport car park.Russell Taylor, 41, an account director from Kinross in Scotland, saw the flames after flying in to Luton Airport from Edinburgh.

In a statement at 7.30am on Wednesday, the airport said: "Our priority remains supporting the emergency services and the safety of our passengers and staff. Therefore, we have now taken the decision to suspend all flights until 3pm on Wednesday 11th October. More than 15 crews from Bedfordshire Fire Service tackled the blaze with nearby residents advised to close their windows to avoid the smoke. East of England Ambulance Service said four firefighters and one member of airport staff had been taken to hospital but the critical incident had been stood down.
