A man has been arrested in connection with the alleged abuse of a Scottish Government minister in a public place.

Patrick Harvie, the Scottish Greens co-leader, was speaking to reporters in Rutherglen last week when the alleged incident involving a passer-by happened. The MSP was in the South Lanarkshire town to promote his party's candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Following a report of homophobic comments a 59-year-old man has been arrested and charged. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal." Harvie was appointed Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants' Rights in 2021 following the Bute House Agreement between the Greens and SNP.
