Manchester City are not encouraging enquiries for James McAtee but there is a recognition that he may have to move in the window
Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain were impressed enough with the player’s loan spell at Sheffield United to make sure serious interest in the midfielder has been knocked back this summer, and the club are again reluctant to see him leave even if only on loan; the manager reaffirmed on Tuesday that McAtee is part of his plans and numerous clubs looking to loan or buy him continue to be discouraged.
However, as City’s chase of Lucas Paqueta takes on a greater urgency following the serious injury to Kevin De Bruyne, there is an acceptance from all parties that the best plan for McAtee this season may involve another move. While Guardiola wants to keep the 20-year-old in his squad, he would need to convince the player that he can get enough minutes to be content.
That is complicated by McAtee's status after his season playing regularly in the Championship, with a handful of Premier League clubs and Dutch greats Ajax among the options undeterred by City's efforts to keep the player and offering minutes every week at a high level. McAtee was an unused substitute for the Super Cup, indicating the challenge ahead of him at the Etihad to play regularly even before another signing in that midfield role could arrive.
The summer market has seen plenty of clubs happy to spend significant sums already and that is expected to continue in a final fortnight of a window that will be busier than City are used to as they try to reinforce their squad.
