23-year-old Mustafa Dawood from Sudan fell around 60ft while trying to escape British officials and was found on the floor of an industrial unit with head injuries.
A young man who died while trying to escape immigration officers in south Wales fled to the UK to flee persecution, an inquest has heard.
Jurors at Gwent Coroner’s Court in the city were told on Monday – the first day of the inquest – that they would be asked to decide what contributed to Mr Dawood’s death.The court heard Mr Dawood was of the Zaghawa tribe from the Darfur region of western Sudan – a non-Arabic people who often face persecution from local Arab militia groups.
She added: ‘In the event there were any facts that contributed to Mustafa’s death, it will be up to you to determine what they were.’The jury was shown CCTV footage of Mr Dawood being pursued through buildings on Albany Trading Estate.A few minutes later he was found on the floor of a warehouse, before being taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and being pronounced dead at 2.45pm.
‘It affected very much when they heard he had died – this is a testimony as to the strength of his friendships.’
