Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward
The woman was walking down Market Street in Farnworth when she was approached by two people, police said. A man then tried to snatch her handbag.
Police want to speak to two members of the public who tried to help the victim on the scene. In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 3.30pm on Wednesday 9 August, police were called to reports of a robbery on Market Street, Bolton.

Man shot by police dies following car chase in Rhode Island, teen daughter woundedPolice in Rhode Island say officers fatally shot a man in Providence after he led them on 20-mile car chase with his teenage daughter riding in the car.
