The Glazers are set to remain with some control at Man Utd after the strategic review but the outcome is better than it could have been.
Football is boom or bust now. Driven by the 24-hour news cycle, there is very little middle ground, very little time to step back, and reactions are instantaneous. It's great or it's grim and perhaps nowhere is that range of emotions as magnified as at Manchester United.
Part of the reason Sheikh Jassim's bid has collapsed is that this was the only option from that camp. There was no attempt to get a foot in the door. It was all or nothing and it will be nothing. That is not the full sale that fans wanted, but it is better than nothing, and focusing anger on Ratcliffe for lining up a deal with the Glazers is missing the point. It's a start, a foot in the door, and it is likely to come with a significant say, if not total control, over sporting decisions.
This at least changes the dynamics within the boardroom. It should speed up decision-making, rather than having to wait for Joel Glazer to rise in the US before major calls can be signed off. It should also improve on-the-ground leadership at Old Trafford, an area where this club has been found to be desperately lacking recently.
