Erik ten Hag's tactical thinking backfired in Man United's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Sunday's derby at Old Trafford.
After beating Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford back in January, Manchester United found themselves just one point behind their rivals and title chatter started to creep into conversations.
Geographically, United and City are separated by just over four miles. However, Sunday's derby was a reminder that the difference in football terms is much, much greater. Had the aforementioned duo been unavailable through injury, it would have made slightly more sense. The fact Ten Hag, however, confirmed Varane and Reguilon were on the bench due to 'tactical reasons' was nothing short of astounding.
As defiant as Ten Hag was in his pre-match interview with the club's in-house TV channel, making it clear his decisions to start Evans and Lindelof were 'tactical', nobody could make sense of them except him. Varane, despite his fitness issues, remains United's best defender. McTominay's role, as a result of Amrabat's half-time exit, changed in an instant. He went from operating high to having to operate deep, alongside a fellow midfielder who also wanted to operate in advanced areas.
