Harry Maguire has been treated as a pantomime villain for a long time but Man Utd matchgoing fans have often leapt to his defence.
It's probably expecting too much to hope that the supporters who have ridiculed Harry Maguire at away games for club and country recently have felt a sense of embarrassment after the defender's comments while on international duty this week.
Maguire's every touch was cheered by Scotland fans at Hampden Park and it was a similarly bizarre introduction he had against Arsenal at the Emirates earlier this season, when he was cheered by the Arsenal supporters. On that occasion, the away end began signing his name. He might not get the same support from United fans on social media, but then the temperature on those channels is hardly indicative of the feelings of those who go to matches.
"Everyone, whether you’re a footballer or not, you have challenges every day, and we are in the spotlight but every day people wake up with mental health , whether it’s going to their own jobs or anything. "I’d say there have been times where they probably haven’t been to as many games as they did previously, especially the away games. But I’m sure over my career they’ve had amazing times and they’ll speak really highly of it. I’m sure in the future, I’ve still got many more years left and they’ll have some amazing times as well.”
