Man who accidently started large moorland fire with cigarette in Helmshore let off with caution
, police urged members of the public to act responsibly when out enjoying the sunshine.
“Whilst we all want to enjoy the sunshine, it is vital that we protect our countryside and wildlife,” a spokesman for Lancashire Police said. “This incident highlights how easily a fire can start through pure carelessness with items such as cigarettes, disposable BBQs and open fires etc.”- Never use disposable barbecues on moorland or grassland. Pack a picnic instead.
- Avoid smoking on moorland. If you do, always extinguish your cigarette and other smoking materials thoroughly.- Never leave bottles behind, as sunlight can become focused as it shines through glass, starting fires.
