You can’t stage a romantic scene, despite what Instagram and endless #couplegoals photos might suggest
You turn to your partner, smiling, doe-eyed with lips perfectly puckered. But as you lean in towards each other, you hear voices approaching. It’s another couple and they sound annoyed. They’re asking you to move because it’s their turn and they’ve been waiting for 10 minutes already and can you please get on with it so they can have their moment in the romantic zone. You apologise and, turning to your partner, give them a quick peck on the cheek before leaving and getting on with your day.
In theory, it’s a nice idea. But in practice, it’s the most absurd thing to happen to romance since that. It’s not just that it feels forced, or deeply lame. It’s not even that it’s devastatingly basic, or an Italian manifestation of “live, laugh, love”. No. It’s that this initiative suggests that one of the most notoriously romantic nations has zero understanding of romance.
