Mandela at the Young Vic fails to bring us closer to the political great Review: ⭐⭐⭐
There are heartfelt moments, but should this be a musical? I’m not convinced
Ntsikelelo Nicholas Vani, Michael Luwoye as Mandela, Akmed Junior Khemalai and Shiv Rabheru in Mandela at the Young Vic a musical about one of the most iconic figures of the 20th and early 21th centuries ? Moving swiftly on from my instinctive response of “don’t”, it is imperative that clear decisions are made at the beginning of the creative process.
Greg Dean Borowsky and Shaun Borowsky’s music offers a beguiling if generic soundtrack of the seductive rhythms of South Africa – it’s a glorious noise when the large cast sings in unison – to which choreographer Gregory Maqoma has the actors dance with foot-stomping conviction. The most memorable number is the quiet and heartfelt “What Dada will Say”, sung by Mandela’s daughters Zeni and Zindzi as they try to imagine post-prison interactions with a father they barely remember.
Mandela himself remains a somewhat shadowy figure in his own narrative, coming into his own only belatedly via his grace and dignity on Robben Island, which Luwoye captures memorably, along with the future president’s wonderfully distinctive speaking voice. There is a touching sketch of his shifting relationship with a prison warden , who comes to realise the almighty moral and emotional stature of Prisoner 46664. But should this all be a musical? I remain unconvinced.
