Mapped: Nine Lancashire beaches people are being warned to avoid amid sewage leaks
Marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage has published an interactive map after recent rainfall caused waste water to be discharged into the sea. A total of 83 beaches across the UK have been included in the new warning, including St Annes, St Annes North, Blackpool South, Blackpool Central, Blackpool North, Bispham, Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Morecambe North while nearby Southport is also listed, The Mirror reports.
The full list of beaches currently under sewage pollution alerts from SAS are listed below. The Environment Agency has been been approached for comment on the latest sewage leaksSAS monitors water quality across the nation to alert the public to areas affected by sewage. They say swimming in these areas could lead to infections and illnesses caused by bacteria and viruses in the water.
It comes after recent figures analysed by Top of the Poops claimed that in just one year, England and Wales’ waterways had sewage pumped into them for at least 3.4million hours. Sewage and agricultural pollution have put the UK at the bottom of the list in Europe for bathing water quality.
