Ferrier was removed from the seat on Tuesday evening after nearly 15 per cent of her constituents signed a recall petition.
Margaret Ferrier will not stand in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election after she was sacked as an MP.
In a statement to Sky News following the recall petition result, she said it had been a “difficult and taxing process” and she did not want to “prolong it further”.“It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the member of parliament for Rutherglen and Hamilton West. I have always put my job and my constituents first, and I am disappointed that this will now come to an end.
The date of the by-election is not known as the motion, known as a writ, needs to be passed in parliament, which is in recess until early September.The SNP has confirmed that it will pass the writ as soon as parliament returns on September 4. Ferrier was given 270 hours of community service in September 2022 after pleading guilty to breaking Covid travel rules. She did a Covid test on September 26, 2020 after showing symptoms, including a cough.
