More people are enjoying the scenic towpaths of the Scottish canals. Our canals support cycling by offering a traffic-free, and pollution-free route for cyclists of all levels.
It passes beautiful greenspaces such as the Claypits Nature Reserve and there is access to nature along the way. Research by the University of Glasgow has highlighted that cycling to work is associated with a 45% lower risk of developing cancer and a 46% lower risk of heart disease, compared to a non-active commute.
Cycling is, of course, a completely carbon neutral mode of transport and reduces the demand to build, service and dispose of cars or other fossil fuel-dependent vehicles. It is possible for a 10km each way commute by bike to save 1500kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
