Martin Lewis calls for easier access to £2,000 savings for young people with special educational needs
Martin Lewis has shared some disappointing news for families of young people with special educational needs trying to access their Child Trust Funds with unclaimed savings of up to £1,900. The consumer champion wrote to the Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing, Claire Coutinho MP, asking her to “do more to help 80,000 teens with special ed needs to unlock their Child Trust Fund money”.
"Whilst not necessary for every child with SEND , where appropriate, the Mental Capacity Act plays a critical role in giving parents and carers the legal authority to make financial decisions where an individual lacks mental capacity, either through a Lasting Power of Attorney or the Court of Protection.”
Nearly one million young adults - or 42 per cent of all 18 to 20-year-olds entitled to the money - are missing out on it, according to its report.
