Consumer champion Martin Lewis has urged pensioners on a low income to check if they are eligible for Pension Credit and apply before December 10 to receive a £300 cost of living payment.
Martin Lewis has shared a crucial date in December that could give nearly 900,000 people over State Pension age the £300 cost of living lump sum long after the current payment window closes. Around 8 million people on means-tested benefits will receive the one-off payment before November 19, if they were in receipt of an eligible benefit during the qualifying period.
That’s because Pension Credit is a retrospective benefit that can be backdated by up to three months, taking it to within the cost of living qualifying period. Top Money Stories Today Martin said: “There are 900,000 eligible pensioners out there who should be getting Pension Credit and aren’t. It can be worth £3,000 a year and it’s a gateway to benefits like this.
He added: “Go and check and if you know someone who may be in that position, 900,000 of our oldest people and some of the most vulnerable in the country are missing out on this crucial top-up to their income and this payment.”
