Martin Lewis is urging a quarter of a million people of State Pension age who are paying rent to check if they qualify for Housing Benefit from their local council
. A new report from the think-tank, Policy in Practice, estimates that £929 million is going unclaimed in Housing Benefit each year by pensioner households.
People over 66 who make a new claim for Pension Credit before midnight on Friday May 19, which later turns out to be successful, will also qualify for the £900 means-tested cost of living payment - including the £301 lump sum which has just been paid to more than 8.3 million households across Great Britain.
Earlier this week, while co-hosting Good Morning Britain, Martin Lewis called on the nation to work together to help around one million pensioners check if they qualify for the ‘gateway’ benefit that could be worth more than £3,500 each year on top of their State Pension - you can read more about this here.
Some older people think because they have savings or own their home they would not be eligible for any Pension Credit, but the DWP said hundreds of thousands could be missing out on the extra money and discounts it provides every month. This means they cannot claim Pension Credit or pension age Housing Benefit until they are both State Pension age.
