Roberto Martinez has ‘verbally agreed’ to take charge of the Portugal national team 🇵🇹
Martinez left his role as Belgium boss following the end of the World Cup in Qatar
Martinez had recently been head coach of Belgium’s national team but left his role after the World Cup in Qatar when his side crashed out in the group stage. The former Wigan and Everton boss has led Belgium since 2016 and led them to third-place in the 2018 World Cup and then to the quarter-final of Euro 2020.“I arrived with the clear idea of qualifying for the World Cup. Then we became so engaged with the project and won the bronze medal. I’m so proud of these players.
“It has been amazing. Six years where we’ve been able to do everything you want to do … the team has played has given people real joy. But this is the time for me to accept .” Martinez added: “I don’t resign. It’s the end of my contract. Since 2018 I had many opportunities to leave and take jobs at club level, but I wanted to stay loyal.”
