Walking towards Studio 2, I passed by portraits of The Beatles, Blur, Pink Floyd, Oasis, Elton John, Kate Bush and a young teddy boy called Cliff Richard. As is constantly reinforced in the documentary, this is still a working studio. Mary tells me that this was one of the main driving forces behind the film. “People can’t just come in and visit, but so many people want to. I see people on that zebra crossing all the time, and you can tell it means a lot to them – it’s an emotional place.
I wonder if there was ever a risk of this turning into a Beatles documentary. “I was always very aware of the balance in the edit,” says Mary. “The Beatles were a big part of it, and they were always going to be a thread. More than anybody, they keep coming in and out because they did so many albums there.”
“I like that about him though,” says Mary. “He can play anything – it’s annoying. I hadn‘t heard these stories a hundred times before either. People imagine that we sit asking them questions, but when it’s your own family you don’t think to do it. As I grew up and left home I did it more and more, like with my mum and photography. I said, ‘I want to go for lunch and ask you about your career.’ That was the one time I sat her down and asked her about it. I wish I’d done it all the time now.
