The world's largest volcano, in Hawaii, is erupting for the first time in almost forty years.
Mauna Loa - the world's largest active volcano - is erupting for the first time since 1984.
"No one knows exactly why this hotspot exists," says Dr Carmen Solana, a volcanologist at Portsmouth University in the UK, "but it may be caused by the decay of radioactive material within the Earth's mantle. When Mauna Loa erupts, says Dr Solana, magma first wells up in the caldera - the bowl-shaped pit at the summit of the volcano. Called Mokuaweoweo, it covers an area of six square miles and is 600 feet deep.
