Dublin-based creator Kaz, of the brand Kazclops, is the brains behind Doja Cat’s startling headpieces.
Raised in Bray and based in Dublin, Kaz is a one-woman operation who started making headpieces during the pandemic in 2020. She cites the Chilean textile artistas a big influence on her decision to start a brand, but as time went on, Kaz carved out her own niche and aesthetic, which she describes as a blend of “cute and creepy”. She also emphasises that each piece possesses “its own persona” – no two are identical.
So, what inspires Kaz’s unconventional headgear? “Initially, it was all about anime, like [manga series]– that’s where the cutesy element came from,” she explains. “But now, when I see a ball of yarn, it sort of speaks to me and in my head I end up envisioning exactly what I want it to turn into.”The artist in her pierced bear headpiece.As for her process, the artist follows her instincts more than she plans, meaning a piece can take anywhere between 12 hours and a month to complete.
Kaz says her anatomical heart balaclava counts as her most labour-intensive endeavour to date. “I kept trying and re-trying for days, laying in bed visualising how I could make my thoughts a reality – it wasn’t easy,” she reflects. As for her most cherished creation, she points to her pierced bear balaclava, recalling: “I saw a ball of yarn at a shop in Turkey and I knew instantly what it was going to look like; as if it was magic.
. While attracting more A-listers is always a possibility, it’s not her primary goal. Instead, Kaz prioritises dreaming up narratives for her unique pieces, a commendable pursuit in today’s fast-paced, fast fashion-obsessed world.
