Deetray Jarret wants to become the first person of colour to win a Grand Tour. It is a bold and inspirational statement, but after speaking with him and his father, it is evident why his aims and aspirations are so high and remarkable!TEENAGE CYCLIST Deetray Jarret wants to become the first person of colour to win a Grand Tour.
The governing body is British Cycling, the standard route is to go through British Cycling, but they would only pick the best riders, if you’re not in the top four or five in the country, you have to find another route, try and find people to sponsor you and that’s very difficult. It is about getting Deetray abroad every other weekend, buying bikes, equipment the list goes on, coaching. The biggest financial cost this season as well as travel, race fees and wheels, tyres etc.
It’s a bit sad. You feel like you’re left out because there’s no one from your background there. It’s happened before where in some races there are some riders who have just teamed up the whole race, just against me to try and beat me.Years ago, when we started, you go to the races, and people would say, ‘you do know this sports expensive.’ We would reply ‘yes, we know it’s expensive but we’re here to compete like everybody else’, and there has been a lot of negativity around it.
