A knife fell to the floor during the incident

A member of staff at Farmfoods was punched in the face when he challenged a shoplifter he followed out of the store. on May 1 last year.

A colleague stood on the blade to stop the attacker, Daniel Harrison, picking it up, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Thursday . Both staff members retreated to Farmfoods in Oak Tree Lane, Mansfield, and called police. Harrison, who has Schizophrenia, was found guilty after a trial of possessing a bladed article and assault by beating. He pleaded guilty to theft of coffee, steak and sausages from Farmfoods, and possessing Class C drug Zopiclone, which is used to treat sleep problems.The 33-year-old, of Osmaston Walk, Mansfield, had the drug down his trousers and underwear. He is under his local mental health team and a psychiatrist and has treatment every four weeks.

Judge Stuart Rafferty KC told Harrison as he sentenced him: "Whatever reason you have for carrying knives, it had better stop now, because if, during the next two years, you carry another one, you and I will see each other again". Harrison left court with a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, a two-year community order, and a mental health treatment requirement.
