The Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States. Played near-continuously since 1914, it pits amateur and professional teams from all over the country against each other in a single-elimination, knockout tournament. In his remarks to reporters, Martino also touched on how Miami’s run through Leagues Cup changed his game plan in terms of building chemistry between Miami’s newcomers and existing players.
“Sometimes one imagines a scenario, and the competition will take you to an entirely different scenario,” said Martino. “We thought that we needed time to train with so many new players, and in that scenario it would’ve been much better to not make such a long run in this tournament. In the end, we won the tournament anyways. I’m happy — when you’re looking to build a team, being a part of a competition like this and winning it grows everybody’s excitement and confidence.
