One senior Met officer accused the Home Secretary of using the forces' response to the protests to make 'political gain'

One senior Met officer accused the Home Secretary of using the forces’ response to the protests to make ‘political gain’Metropolitan Police officers are “sick” of the Government pushing them to “reach beyond the law” to arrest protesters for “political gain”,that those within the force were frustrated with Home Secretary Suella Braverman after she criticised them for failing to arrest protesters chanting “jihad” in London over the weekend.

Downing Street has indicated that there are no plans to change the legislation, arguing that police already have “extensive powers in this space”. Section 4 of the Public Order Act prohibits the “fear of provocation of violence” by the use of “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour”. However, the law states that the words must be directed towards an individual.

Another senior policing source said: “It’s a very tricky situation. Hamas is a terrorist organisation so any support for them is an offence and officers should deal with flags and posters supporting them, but just supporting Palestine or complaints that Israel is bombing innocents is hard to argue with.

“Policing is not about politics. It’s about making sure the nation’s laws are implemented correctly. The Home Secretary is just playing politics with a sensitive topic and arguably making the situation worse.” “We have also sought advice from specialist Crown Prosecution Service lawyers who have reached the same conclusion.”
