The Met has launched a free hotline for the public to report rogue officers and staff to Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption squad Senior current and former police officers have warned that the Met’s new anti-corruption hotline will lead to officers from ethnic minorities being wrongly targeted.to Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption squad., with tips being passed on to the Met’s Professional Standards department.
“As we speak it’s ongoing,” he said. “Allegations are made, and officers are subjected to a protracted period of investigation and sometimes the fabrication is made to stick, and people are damaged in the process.” However, Insp Ehikioya said: “What protective measures have they got in place to ensure that individuals like myself, don’t get arbitrarily targeted by some fictitious allegation?”
He was driving home after a shift in May 2020 when he was followed for two miles by officers and stopped in Croydon. He said he decided to go public after attempts to resolve his complaints internally failed, and at the time the Met said the officers who stopped him did nothing wrong. Ms Mehtab said the force is “institutionally racist” and chiefs must “fix the problem” before they start to “plaster over it”.
The hotline will start with complaints from the public. The fear is that reports against officers from ethnic minorities will be investigated at a higher rate than those against white officers. that being under investigation, even for a minor allegation, made the subject feel “weak and downtrodden”, spending time “looking over your shoulder” and wondering who has reported against you.
The officer had been accused of stealing a personal item from a colleague which he says he thought was his. Despite explaining the mix-up and returning the item, the officer faced a months-long investigation where he was moved to a different force and placed on a close watch. The commander acknowledged fears from senior officers in the Met that the new hotline could lead to some members of staff, who are from ethnic minorities, being disproportionately targeted.
