Metropolitan Police chief warns NHS strikes could hit response to crime 🔴 Sir Mark Rowley said officers were already 'spending too much time' on social and health work, which could get worse as nurses walk out
, Sir Mark said: “As a seven-day, 24-hour emergency service, police officers are spending too much time doing social and health work where the other agencies have for many reasons stepped back. Which will only be exacerbated when other public services strike, something that the police as Crown Servants cannot do.
“You may be shocked to learn that for every mental health patient we help, two officers spend an average of 14 hours in total waiting with them in A&E, while the NHS sorts out its response. Most alarmingly, our usage of Section 136 under the Mental Health Act has increased by 450 per cent since 2013.”
Other health worker unions including Unison and the GMB will announce the results of strike ballots before the end of the month among staff including ambulance drivers and paramedics, hospital porters and cleaners. The Public and Commercial Services union has said over 100,000 civil servants have voted to strike in a dispute over pay, pensions and jobs.had already made commitments to attend all burglaries and tackle London drugs lines but the ongoing protests in the capital and having to police football matches was stretching its capacity.
“The vast majority of protests, which are growing in severity and impact, take place in London, as do a third of Premier League football matches where we are seeing a sharp upturn in violence. The impact of serious crime on London is also heavy. All of this while the capital’s population has grown to over 9 million in a decade,” he said.He said: “The amount of funding for policing London, when looked at per person in our population, has fallen.
