Methane is considered to be a major driver of global warming as it is much more powerful at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, but it only lasts in the atmosphere for about a decade.

Daniel Zavala is one of the researchers behind the report and described the findings as"alarming and worrying" and said it shows a"huge gap" in leak rates.

Together with 12 other climate change scientists, he studied 20 months of data gathered between 2018 and 2019 by the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument, a single sensor onboard a European Space Agency satellite. He added:"Cutting these emissions in half would have the same climate benefit over 20 years as removing one-third of total passenger cars in the country."

The study estimates 1.3 million tons of methane is wasted in Mexico per year, about one third of the nation's natural gas imports and equivalent to $200m . It found high emissions at facilities that gather, compress and store the gas, is to blame for the country's bad record.
