Action on the pitch was impressive enough, but off the pitch this World Cup has made huge steps forward for women's football.
I couldn’t sleep last night before this final and I’ve put together some thoughts. I’m talking about the Lionesses here, but I think it applies to so many teams at the World Cup.A lot of these girls have had to go to football with a boys’ team. I know Lucy Bronze did, being the only girl there picked on for liking football. I was bullied for playing. It wasn’t normal. It wasn’t what girls did at my school.
That’s why I admire this England group even more because, Lucy Bronze, Beth England, Jordan Nobbs, all a similar age to me. They had nowhere to play. I played for an academy. We didn’t even have a league because there were so few academies. And this is the same story for so many women. Can you pay your bills? Can you keep a roof over your head? It’s not an issue for men. That’s the truth. Periods and menstrual cycles barely even tapped into in football, yet the same in the wider workplace, I feel. And only now have we begun to investigate.
If you want to grow the game, you have to buy into everything. And I really hope this next generation of girls isn’t going to have the experience that generations have had before. They won’t be bullied for wearing a football shirt on non-uniform day. They won’t be teased for playing football at break time. They won’t be stopped from joining in in PE. They won’t struggle to find a local girls’ team, a local academy, a kit that fits.
