It’s been another wild MLB offseason, with record contracts, surprise signings and well over $2 billion already spent on free agents. The Yankees kept Aaron Judge in pinstripes, the Rangers made a statement by landing Jacob deGrom, the Mets wasted little time in moving on to another multiple-Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander, the Phillies inked Trea Turner to the second-longest free-agent contract in history, and the Padres broke hearts in Boston by getting Xander Bogaerts.
This free-agent market is awash in “overpays,” in terms of years and dollars, including the contracts for Judge, deGrom, Turner, Bogaerts and Brandon Nimmo, among others. In my grades, I didn’t penalize teams for what I consider to be overpaid contracts that could or will end badly. In the short term, teams largely benefit by adding stars, even if they’re on monster deals, so for these grades, I refrained from making longer-term judgements on contracts.
