John Vine, former Independent Chief Inspector of Borders & Immigration, says pushing back boats from the English Channel has 'real implications for human rights' and doesn't actually deal with the root 'cause of the problem'.

Sky News has been given all areas access to the French police officers trying to thwart small boat crossings by migrants and asylum seekers trying to reach the UK.

Millions of pounds have been passed to the French – £55 million this year alone – to help with the effort to halt small boat journeys. There are tracks through a wheat field that the police say show the paths migrants take from hiding places in the hills to the beaches below.Migrants journeying from the hills leave tracks behind themMigrants and asylum seekers remove them just before their journeys across the Channel. At one spot they find a vehicle with the seats folded down and the officers say its likely to have been used by smugglers to deliver a small boat to people trying to cross the Channel.

An officer helps collect the items police have seized. He carries the oars that would have been used to paddle the boat Police teams react but by the time they get there the people have run away, maybe hearing the sound of the plane and fearing they had been spotted. Chief Sergeant Villeilm from French Border Police regularly patrols the coastline from Boulogne to Dunkirk

“We have needs and our needs are listened to. When we may need equipment, like thermal binoculars, we received them. This indeed contributes to the successful achievement of our missions”. More than 10,000 people have already made it across the channel this year.I’ve stood on the shores of the coastline around Calais many times and been able to see the cliffs of Dover clearly. From the beach or the dock the water can seem deceptively calm.

We are being thrown around and cling to the arms of our chairs as the boat fights against the intense current and waves.
