His comments lead the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, which he helped found, to rename its top award, the Barry, in 2019. At the time it confirmed the decision was largely down to Humphries’ repeated comments about the transgender community. But now Miriam, 81, has defended her long-time friend, expressing her frustration about the commentary that has emerged after his passing.‘I don’t think he was properly appreciated by Australia, and I don’t think he was properly treated, particularly by the Melbourne Festival, who cancelled him rather late in life,’ she said.
