WASHINGTON D.C. — Rob Manfred, a polarizing leader and an aggressive agent of change who has overseen record revenues in the sport, received a third term as’s commissioner on Wednesday, extending his contract by four years, until Jan. 25, 2029.
His rule changes for 2023 — major on-field overhauls rarely embarked on in the sport — have largely worked as intended by speeding up the game and increasing action. Sorting out the best way to keep making owners the most money possible, and the best way to deliver baseball games to fans, particularly in this television landscape, might be the most difficult task facing Manfred in the next five-plus years. The television and streaming model is in constant flux, and leagues and teams can no longer rely on the cable bundle alone to prop up the sports’ economics.
The impact of electronic sign-stealing on Manfred’s record goes beyond punishments or lack thereof, however. Manfred and the league also played a role in allowing the behavior to proliferate. And a flippant comment Manfred made in regards to the Astros’ scandal, a reference to the World Series trophy as a piece of metal, still lingers in the minds of some fans. Manfred apologized for the comment.
